Ofcom to make calls to 0800 numbers from a mobile free

If you ever thought you were being ripped off by mobile phone providers when you pay through the nose to call an 0800 number when the same call made from a landline is free - then Ofcom agrees.

Ofcom looks set to change things very soon after a consultation period.

Here are two alarming facts surrounding 0800 numbers:
  • In 2009 people in the UK paid a staggering £1.9 billion calling 0800 numbers from mobile phones
  • The average cost to call an 0800 number from a mobile phone was a cool 40 pence per minute

Ofcom considers making calls to 0800 numbers free from mobile phones

DBS Telecoms welcomes Ofcom's proposals to make calls to 0800 numbers from a mobile phone free.

David Clarke, a director of DBS Telecoms welcomes Ofcom’s proposals  - “ I am pleased to see that Ofcom proposes to simplify the 0800 number pricing structure – it can only be good for our industry” he commented.

Ofcom’s chief executive, Ed Richards, stated: "There is clear evidence of widespread uncertainty and confusion about the cost of calling these numbers. Consumers need to have far more transparency about the price they are going to pay for calls so that they can make more informed choices and so competition can work more effectively. Making 0800 free from a mobile and giving people clarity about what they are paying for will improve transparency, improve competition and enhance trust in these important services."

DBS Report Increase In 0845 Sales

Despite the gloom surrounding the current economic climate combined with the vice like grip that the arctic weather has had on the UK economy the sales of 0845 numbers has continued to rise.
DBS Telecoms inLincolnshire are one company who have benefited from this trend.
“We have achieved solid growth with our 0845 customer base – in fact we are up 19.3% on last year’s sales volume” said DBS Telecoms director Chrissy Clarke who unveiled the buck against the trend at the end of DBS Telecoms first quarter.
There are several plausible explanations....

Take That Call Traffic

As you may be aware, Take That will be releasing additional tickets and dates for their forthcoming tour on Friday 10 December 2010. The last time Take That tickets went on sale on 29 October we saw unprecedented call volumes – 16 times greater than normally expected. Unfortunately, this resulted in congestion on the network for a short period of time.

We anticipate significant demand again and want to advise you in advance that our carriers will take every step to protect all customers on the network during this time. Whilst they have sufficient network capacity, they have plans in place to monitor the traffic and will employ stringent traffic management measures to protect the network as far as possible against any peaks in demand.

UK Phone Numbers are running out...

OFCOM are in a consultation period at the moment which will likely end in February 2011.

Yet again they are faced with a thorny problem as phone numbers are running out.

It's coming up for 7 years since an additional area code was introduced in the London area when 0203 was rolled out to accompany the existing 0207 and 0208 prefixes. Although this action made ten million more numbers available it looks likely that customers will have to dial the full number including the area code when calling from a landline to a landline umber just as they do when calling from a mobile phone to a landline.

UK cities that are rapidly running out of numbers include Derby, Brighton and Blackpool.

A safeguard may be to buy a London phone number now.

Further details can be obtained from DBS Telecoms online press release.

Nottingham leads the way with a new 3 digit health number

There has much reporting in the media recently over the abuse of the UK's long standing emergency number 999. Many trivial calls are made to the 999 service which can clog up the telecoms systems and make it harder for people with genuine emergencies to get the extra fast connection time they may need.

The population of Nottingham now have an alternative to dialling 999. Managers at the NHS hope that the new 111 number will deter the public from calling 999 or visiting the casualty departments of local hospitals if they need advice on non-life threatening situations.

"The 111 service is intended to be a halfway house between 999 and NHS Direct the latter of which was set up to give information and advice on less serious medical problems." commented David Clarke of DBS Telecoms

DBS adds Facebook "Like" button to telecoms pages

As part of its social media strategy DBS has added the Facebook "Like" button to the pages on its website that it uses to market 0800, 0844, 0845 and local phone numbers.

Clicking the "Like" button on any of the telecoms will automatically place a link to the DBS site on a visitors facebook profile. This will raise awareness of DBS’s products and give them added exposure to potential customers via the Facebook community.

Simply put, social media strategies such as this work on the “snowball” principle that you know your friends but you don’t know your friends’ friends.
